When it comes to evaluating and treating women with their hormonal symptoms and conditions, it has naturally evolved into one of my specialties, passions, and superpowers. Whether it’s thyroid hormones, reproductive or sex steroid hormones, adrenal hormones like cortisol or the hormone insulin that supports healthy blood glucose levels, I thrive on replenishing and balancing the entire endocrine (hormonal) system so that my clients can feel vital and rejuvenated!
As part of that hormonal evaluation process, one of the key steps in determining what’s happening with the hormone levels is lab testing. And not just any basic or general lab tests. For the past 15 years that I’ve been in practice, I have been ordering and reviewing a variety of Functional Labs that reveal and demonstrate hormone levels via blood, urine, and salivary collections. There are many other lab tests such as a GI Microbiome Stool Test or a Nutrient Evaluation Blood Panel that will indirectly point toward or suggest hormonal imbalances in the body. That’s precisely where and when the deeper investigation and analysis come into play. Functional labs provide my clients with a more detailed, comprehensive and cutting-edge approach to a more accurate diagnosis…and therefore a more specific therapeutic plan for significantly better results. On the fascinating subject of ever-fluctuating hormones and hormone testing, there are a couple of preferred labs that I have been using for many years to fully assess hormones at the various stages in a woman’s cycle and throughout her life. One of those tests is called the DUTCH Plus by Precision Analytical. D.U.T.C.H. stands for Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones. This flagship test evaluates all of the sex steroid hormones, corticosteroid hormones, hormone metabolites, diurnal pattern, cortisol awakening response, organic acids and many other important markers between urine and saliva. The DUTCH Plus captures a detailed picture of the interaction and harmony (or disharmony) between the reproductive hormones and the adrenal “stress” hormones.
I have another favorite functional lab test that I use to confirm not only several different hormones throughout the entire endocrine system, but several other important body systems and the inter-communication that exists between those systems. This customized blood panel that I had specifically created for clients is called the Comprehensive Blood Chemistry & Hormone Panel provided by Quest Diagnostics. This thorough panel fully encapsulates and reveals the collaboration and synergy (or lack of synergy) of the hormones and the various body systems.
